Unique Handcrafted New Zealand Paua Shell, Mother of Pearl, Freshwater Pearl & Swarovski Crystal Jewellery & Gifts.
Designed and made in Scotland, the exclusive jewellery range combines the iridescence of New Zealand shells with the beautifully cut Swarovski crystals. Paua, pronounced “pah-wah”, is Maori for abalone and is the brightest of all abalone shells. It is sourced directly from New Zealand Pacific coastal waters where the fishing is well managed to ensure this beautiful shell’s sustainability. The fabulous unique green, blue, purple, pink and gold patterns make the shell versatile and wearable by all, reflecting its rainbow hues through the wearers’ clothes or skin tones, or simply sparkling and changing colour as it catches the light.
The ever expanding Accessory and Giftware range include paua shell photo frames and mirrors, bookmarks, keyrings, hairclips & earring gift cards.
Mhairi, the designer, formed the company in 2007 after a year living & working in New Zealand. She first came across the shell in Riverton in the South Island, commonly known as the home of the paua shell. Following her return to Scotland she created Girl Paua Jewellery to bring the wonder of the paua shell to the UK. While the Maoris have been using the shell for centuries to create symbolic jewellery, adding varying colours of beautiful Swarovski crystals compliments the iridescence of the shell and allows people to wear the jewellery for every occasion.
Working from home, Mhairi uses several techniques to make jewellery from shells, including drilling and grinding the shell into smooth shapes, the carving and cutting of shell sheets, the creation of beautiful mirrors using a variety of shell sizes, wire and beading work, plus other methods which ensure customisation is available on all items.
The Events Diary & Stockists pages on www.girlpaua.co.uk detail the many events & galleries throughout the UK where you can see the range for yourself.
