Laura Murray is a designer/maker based in Glasgow. She makes one-off special pieces like intricate lockets in silver and textiles. She also makes a range of silver jewellery.
Her practice is that of both a jeweller and textile maker. She makes, lockets and jewellery in silver, ribbons, fabric, beads and other mixed media. Her pieces are labor intensive and intricate with an attention to detail.
She studied jewellery and silversmithing at Glasgow School of Art gaining a first class honors degree in 1996. She then went on to study embroidered and woven textiles for a Masters of Design in 2000 also from Glasgow School of Art.
Jewellery is the basis of her practice. She uses traditional textiles techniques in jewellery, and loves to work with colour.
Her one-off lockets are inspired by historical objects such as Japanese 'Inro boxes'.
As well as making one off pieces, which showcase her work, she runs her business from her studio in the Briggait in Glasgow and sells ranges of silver jewellery to shops and galleries. She also teaches workshops in her craft.
