See Level designs and makes innovative contemporary furniture and fittings for interior and exterior locations, from contract furnishings and public parks to kitchens and private gardens.
As an association of artists, designers and makers, directed by John Crosby, See Level has found acclaim in the field of public art, through private and commercial commissions, and by working as technicians for architects and other designers. There is not a lot that defeats us; we have years of experience and a wide range of skills and, not least, because we like a challenge!
Past projects have included such materials as forged steel, industrially cast bronze, stone, glass, fabrics and plastic. However, it was the love of timber which started all this off in 1982 and is still the prime material used. We try to source timber close to home, but this is difficult in a non-timber producing nation and, for environmental reasons we stay away from tropical timbers apart from veneer.
The seat illustrated on this page was commissioned by Dumfries and Galloway Council and can be seen at the Tourist Information Centre, Whitesands, Dumfries. It is made using elm from Ellisland Farm, near Dumfries, where the poet Robert Burns was at one time the tenant. The trees were conceivably just saplings when Tam o' Shanter made a run for it.
