About Me

Personal Statement

Suzanne Smith is a designer and maker of contemporary textile jewellery and artworks. Her business, Magpie Maison was launched in 2012. Based in Glasgow, Suzanne trained at the Glasgow School of Art and graduated with a BA (Hons) Silversmithing and Jewellery.

In her final year, she worked with mixed materials including handmade felt, hand dyed lace and precious metals, to create eye catching jewellery and accessories.

A collector by nature, Suzanne gathers and stores relics of the past. Old lace and vintage fabrics are hand dyed and reused in new creations, carefully combined with felt, gems, papers and metals then embellished with stitch. Sewing and embroidery techniques are incorporated in many aspects of the work, both by hand and machine.

Inspiration comes from a variety of sources including flora and fauna, forest walks, beautiful gardens and flower markets. Drawing and photography are used to inform the design process, providing a diverse range of ideas to develop.

Suzanne’s work has been featured in a number of magazine publications including Homes & Interiors Scotland, Embroidery and Cosmopolitan Bride.
