There are some objects that we keep safe, that we treasure far beyond their monetary or practical value: they are cherished because they bring back to us a time, a place, a person who has been significant in our lives.
This course is an opportunity to honour such objects by exploring and recording their significance through the process of making or adapting a book or box. If the objects(s) are small enough, your piece of work may even hold the object itself.
You will learn some of the construction skills associated with book-making and book-altering, and experiment with paint, drawing and collage in order to evoke and illustrate the nature of your connection to the subject. You will also be encouraged to do some guided writing in response to your chosen object, which will give you further material which can be incorporated into your work. By the end of the week, you will have a beautifully illuminated box or book, a creative expression of the relationship between object and memory.
This course does not require any prior experience in art-making or in creative writing.
Old books, boxes and all other book-making and writing materials are provided. The cost of the course includes all these materials, along with refreshments and a cooked vegetarian lunch each day. Please come with a treasured object small enough to be handled easily. You may also want to bring a few associated bits and pieces that you want to incorporate into your project.
On this course Jan will be joined by Chelsea Frew, a mural and illustration artist who is a graduate of Glasgow School of Art. Her charming and fluid drawings are playful in their manner of capturing the essential nature of her subjects and so, for those who are not confident of your drawing abilities, her work makes a good model. At one point in the week, she will lead you through a few imaginative and simple activities to encourage you to let the drawn line lead us into the deep connection between the object and memory.
This course will run 10am to 5pm from Monday 2 to Friday 6 October 2017.
