This course is an opportunity to delve into the woods near tutor Jan's home, taking the time to adjust to the natural sights and sounds and to savour the experience.

During these gentle walks, you will be encouraged to collect mementos, take photographs, make field notes, draw or write anything which comes to mind. You may, of course, wish to do no more than to walk or sit in silence. If the weather permits, as a group you may do a little writing in situ.

After each morning break, you will gather together for an informal creative writing session, devised to give you a voice with which to express and reflect upon your experiences during the walk. These writing sessions are aimed at the beginner writer, are entirely voluntary, and at no time will you be asked to share your work with the group. For those of you who do not wish to join in, there will be plenty of work on this theme by other writers available for you to read and enjoy.

The afternoons will be given over to the soothing processes associated with printing and book-making. You will make handmade paper, using gathered materials, do collage, print-making and a bit of lino cutting, all of which will lead up to the construction of a hand-bound, illustrated journal: a tactile presentation of your very own words from the wood.

On this course, Jan will be joined by Chelsea Frew, an illustration artist who is a graduate of Glasgow School of Art. Her charming and fluid drawings are playful in their manner of capturing the essential nature of her subjects and so, for those who are not confident of drawing abilities, her work makes a good model. At intervals during the week, she will lead you through a few imaginative and simple activities to encourage you to let the drawn line lead you into the very heart of the woods.

This course will run from 10am to 5pm, Monday 17 to Friday 21 July 2017
